The Bay of Plenty DHB has received formal notice for the withdrawal of labour on 9 June 2021 from 11am to 7pm by members of the New Zealand Nurses Organisation. The members are nurses, midwives and health care assistants.

Negotiations between the 20 District Health Boards and the nurses’ union NZNO for the renewal of their collective employment agreement, have been on-going for some time. To date the parties have not been able to reach agreement about their concerns for pay rates and conditions of work.

  • Two days of mediation between DHBs and the NZ Nurses Organisation concluded on Wednesday 19th and DHBs are now working through the matters discussed.
  • In the meantime, the strike notice remains in place and contingency planning is well underway, including discussions with the NZNO to maintain essential services and ensure patient safety.

Should the industrial action we have been notified of by NZNO goes ahead, ie. a full withdrawal of labour by its members, we will have a greatly reduced number of nurses on our wards and in the Emergency Departments of both Tauranga and Whakatāne hospitals.

We will be reducing elective surgery in the days leading up to the strike and on the day of strike action there will be no outpatients’ clinics or elective surgery. Our aim is to keep everyone safe during the strike – patients and staff alike – and that will mean changes to normal services, not just for the period of the industrial action, but for the whole day of 9 June.

We will be asking family members of patients to provide personal care to their loved ones on the wards should they wish (including washing, dressing, toileting and feeding).

To prepare for a disruption of this level, we have a large team in place undertaking contingency planning to ensure the ongoing safety of all patients, whānau, visitors and staff on our sites, if industrial action occurs on that day

Please see below a list of the Open, Reduced and Closed services at our hospitals which can be downloaded. We will keep you updated.
